Photo Collection of the American Memory Project The Library of Congress's "Photo Collection of the American Memory Project" offers background information and searchable databases of nine major collections of photographs taken between 1861 and 1940.

Search For Synonyms in Roget's Internet Thesaurus Type a word in the Full Text search box, hit the Search Full Text button, and Roget's entry on the word appears: synonyms (words that mean the same), antonyms (words that have the opposite meaning) and similar words and phrases.

Yahoo's List of Authors on the Internet This "List of Authors" is a good starting place for research on an author and his or her books. Check here for a list of Internet pages focusing on specific authors. Then click on the name of a specific author to see information about him or her.

A Spelling Test Improve your language skills with this "Spelling Test." It includes many difficult-to-spell words. Choose the correct spelling from the options presented.

English Grammar Handbook This "English Grammar Handbook" was written by students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Made up of a bunch of text documents organized in folders that represent chapters. 

Search Bartlett's Familiar Quotations You can "Search Bartlett's" (1901 edition) at this site maintained by Columbia University to find quotes from throughout history that can lend gravity to your papers. This is also a good place to learn what things a person said or wrote that gained fame.


Languages: French

French/English Dictionary Search a "French/English Dictionary" by typing the word you want to find in the appropriate search box (there's one for translating French to English and another for translating English to French). Then click on the Submit Query button. This page is provided by the University of Chicago's ARTFL Project (short for American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language).

Conjugate French Verbs "Conjugate French Verbs" in any of six tenses by entering the infinitive form of a French verb, selecting from the list of preferred tenses (present, past, future, etc.) and clicking on the Conjugate button. Another ARTFL Project offering.

Statistical Abstract of the United States The U.S. Census Bureau presents the "Statistical Abstract of the United States," which includes data on current conditions like population, gross domestic product, median family income and birth and death rates.

The Constitution of the United States This hypertext version of the "Constitution of the United States" offers the document in outline format so you can move easily to the text you want to read. The Emory University site also contains links to related amendments and footnotes and offers search capability (see the bottom of the Constitution page).

The Legislative Process -- Tying it All Together "The Legislative Process" from the U.S. Congress takes you through the process of a making a bill into law. Broken into several easy-to-understand chapters, this guide makes it simple to review the legislative process step by step.

Search the Smithsonian Web Known fondly as "the nation's attic," the Smithsonian Institution has been acquiring objects for research and display for 150 years. You truly can "Search the Smithsonian Web" for information on almost anything." The Smithsonian has placed online a compilation of materials pulled from its voluminous collections, and at this site you can enter words to search on and be taken to links within the Institution's Internet site. Lots of pictures enhance the presentation.

The "American Memory" Project A collection of primary source materials and supporting documents that illustrate the history of the United States. The project houses motion pictures, photographs, sound files and documents. (To view the motion pictures on your computer, you will need a program such as Media Player (mplayer.exe), one of the programs that comes with Microsoft Windows.) 

Special Collections in the Library of Congress This takes you to indices of primary documents held by the Library of Congress. You can look for documents by geographic region, by era, by type of document or by subject matter.
